Historical background

The Limenaria cultural association “To Kastro” - “The Castle” - was established in 1977 by a group of villagers whose aim was to give a new prospective to the cultural life of our place and beyond that, a different point of view in the way they saw the quality of life in our village’s small society. It started with a temporary administrative committee and the next  year  proceeded in elections which resulted in the appointment of mr. Aggelo Diamatari, to the post of the first president  of the association. That is the time, when the first festivities - including traditional dancing, celebration of the Politehnio anniversary with songs composed by Miki Theodoraki, and a photography exhibition-, take place successfully.

It followed a period of 2-3 years during which there was no real action, and then a reunion in 1981. In 1982 we have the revival of the custom “Gia vrex’ Aprili m’ ” which is still organized every year after Easter. The same year, the association in cooperation with the Hellenic Cinematography Center organized film showing, an initiative which resulted in the opening of its own cinema; with a fund given by the community of Limenaria in 1984. Since 1985 a blood bank has opened offering help to anyone of the villagers who needs it. The Golden Era of the association is around 1990, when apart from Theatre performances, directed and performed in great success by the villagers themselves, there is a radio station with great transmission; broadcasting everyday a full-time program.

After 1995, there isn’t much of activity due to internal problems. Thankfully, the last few years, there is a refreshment with the coming of    new members, who took in their hands the administration and – aiming, mainly, at the new generation -, paid a lot of attention in the creation of many departments for the kids and the youth. Thus, we are able to say, that today, 27 years after its establishment, the cultural association “ To Kastro” is ready to meet the demands of the new era.
